Black★Rock Shooter first announced last year – recently released it’s pilot edition and it was well worth the wait. The character design for Black Rock Shooter was originally posted on the blog of a now well known artist, Huke as a standalone character design. This later caught the eye of Supercells leader, Ryo, to write a song entitled the same name.

I will warn you in advance that beyond this point may contain spoilers.

The story follows the life of a young girl, Mato Kuroi,  as she moves into her new school and makes new friends. It shows her progress through the year and shows how she and her classmate and closest friend, Yomi Takanashi’s relationship builds as well as crumbles.

At the same time as showing this, it displays an alternate world where the Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master battle it out. If you were to interpret the characters appearance in this other world as to how the characters of the real world are – it would be possible to argue that you know the reasons why things in the real world go the way they do.

Say for instance, the reason Yomi disapears is because of Dead Masters, green eye’d jealousy – typical of a witch and probably where the magic chains come into play. To tie down the person she wants to keep to herself… If this was an ecchi anime, you know some yuri action would so be nailed in here right now, right?

Ah well, even if it’s not ecchi or perverted like most anime you see nowadays, this captures greatness in ways words can’t describe and I’d advise it to anyone, no matter what kind of anime genre you prefer. Heck even if you don’t like anime! It’s that great. As cliché as many may say it is, I expect much more jaw dropping action when the series officially starts – come this New Year. I’m amazed already, and this was only the OVA.
